The Alberta Junior Hockey League held its Board of Governors meeting on November 23, 2019, with one primary focus revolving around the regular-season schedule, along with other rule changes that are expected to help the progression of the league as a whole.
It was agreed that the league would implement a full ‘interlocking’ schedule beginning in the 2020-21 season.
The new interlocking schedule means that each of the 15 teams will play four games against each AJHL team, plus two games as the AJHL Showcase weekend. In total, each team will play 58 games in the 2020-2021 regular season. Moving passed next season, the 2021-2022 season will include 16 teams (including Blackfalds) playing the same interlocking schedule for 60 games total in the regular season.
The top 14 AJHL teams will qualify for the 2021 and 2022 AJHL post-season with the top two teams receiving a first-round bye. Each round will be a best-of-seven series.
• North Division – Top 7 teams qualify for best-of-seven 1st Round (1st place receives Bye)
• South Division – Top 6 teams qualify for best-of-seven 1st Round (1st & 2nd place receives Bye)
As seen in the NHL, the AJHL will introduce a version of Hybrid Icing in 2020-2021 as well as allowing the coach of the non-offending team to select which side of the ice the faceoff will be held after an icing.
