Hunter Virostek has been a mainstay in net since joining the Drumheller Dragons in 2016-17 and now in his final season, the 20-year-old has solidified himself as the winningest goaltender in franchise history.
Virostek picked up his 54th career win in storybook fashion, posting a 31-save, 2-0 shutout against the Drayton Valley Thunder at the Memorial Arena. With the ‘W’ he surpassed the previously held mark of 53 wins, set by former Dragons goaltender Jonathan Larose back in 2006-07.
Becoming the Dragons All-Time wins leader is an accomplishment that feels great individually but one that, first and foremost, Virostek credits to his teammates.
“It’s pretty cool. It’s pretty gradual over three years, but it kind of hits you after it happens. I couldn’t have done it without the team, they’ve been scoring a lot of goals, they’ve be playing great and obviously you can’t win if you don’t score goals so it’s a combined effort.”
“It’s pretty exciting and not many people get that opportunity to have that milestone, but all I can say is: keep going and keep getting more wins.”
The previous wins record held for over 11 years and 690 regular season games. Virostek stands to significantly increase his current mark of 54 wins before the season is out, a record that may stand for even longer. Only time will tell.
